Gone With The Wind (1939)
One of the best-loved films of all time, producer David O. Selznick’s grand-scale adaptation of Margaret Mitchell’s bestseller won eight competitive Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Rural Georgia during the Civil War and the Reconstruction provides the backdrop for the epic love triangle between coquettish Southern belle Scarlett O’Hara (Vivien Leigh), gambler-rogue Rhett Butler (Clark Gable), and gentleman farmer Ashley Wilkes (Leslie Howard). Olivia de Havilland and Hattie McDaniel co-star. 3 3/4 hrs. C/Rtg: G
Waterloo Bridge (1940)
The timeless wartime romance and oft-requested title at Movies Unlimited features a fine performance by Vivien Leigh as Myra Lester, a ballerina who falls in love with British officer Roy Cronin (Robert Taylor) in war-torn London. But when she’s led to believe Roy is killed while fighting in World War I, Myra turns to a life of prostitution in order to make ends meet. With Lucile Watson, Virginia Field, Maria Ouspenskaya, C. Aubrey Smith. 109 min. BW/Rtg: NR
That Hamilton Woman (1941)
Laurence Olivier stars with (then-wife) Vivien Leigh in this telling of the doomed love affair between Lady Emma Hamilton and Captain Horatio Nelson in 19th-century England. In this story of love, courage, and heroism, Olivier’s smitten naval officer Nelson proves his dedication to the married Hamilton (Leigh) after she helps him in his battles against Napoleon’s armada. Directed by Alexander Korda; with Alan Mowbray, Gladys Cooper. 125 min. BW/Rtg: NR
Caesar And Cleopatra (1945)
Claude Rains and Vivien Leigh are the historic lovers in an epic adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's witty 1898 stageplay that looks at life in Ancient Egypt, politics, and the romance between the stalwart Roman commander and the seductive Queen of the Nile. With Flora Robson, Stewart Granger, Ernest Thesiger; co-scripted by Shaw.
Anna Karenina (1948)
The lovely Vivien Leigh is magnetic in producer Alexander Korda’s adaptation of the Tolstoy classic, and Ralph Richardson is equally fine as the stodgy husband whose neglect drives her into the arms of another. Lavish drama co-stars Mary Kerridge, Kieron Moore. 112 min. BW/Rtg: NR
A Streetcar Named Desire (1951)
Four Oscars went to director Elia Kazan’s adaptation of playwright Tennessee Williams’ sordid 1947 play of lust and madness in New Orleans’ French Quarter. Marlon Brando launched a revolution in screen acting with his raw portrayal of brutish salesman Stanley Kowalski, who clashes with his wife’s sister Blanche DuBois (Vivien Leigh), a neurotic and delicate Southern belle haunted by her checkered past, who comes to live with them. With Kim Hunter, Karl Malden. 122 min. BW/Rtg: PG
