First, learn about the rediscovery of an unusual silent film in the documentary "When You Wore a Tulip and I Wore a Big Red Nose" (1983), which brings to light the story of "itinerant filmmakers" who specialized in traveling the country and producing movies using local talent, including the Wisconsin-made rarity from 1914 "The Lumberjack." Next, "Palace of Silents: The Silent Movie Theatre in Los Angeles" (2010) profiles an L.A. venue that has maintained a proud (if sometimes difficult and even dangerous to sustain) tradition of showing silent films since its construction in 1942. 3 1/2 hrs. total on two discs. Standard; Soundtrack: English; bonus shorts "The Lumberjack" (1914), "Our Southern Mountaineers" (1918), "In the Moonshine Country" (1918), "Mountain Life" (1918), "Huntingdon's Hero" (1934), "Kidnappers Foil" (1937).
