Septuagenarian Professor Isak Borg (Victor Sjöström) is invited back to his alma mater to receive an honorary degree. Instead of traveling by plane, Borg chooses to make the long journey by car, which affords him the chance to reflect on what he believes are the failures of his life, grave doubts about his existence that are brought out in a series of disturbing and symbolic dreams.
